Currently, I am a full-time student at the University of New Mexico. I am an undergraduate with a triple major: 1) Dance with a concentration in Flamenco 2) Liberal Arts and Integrative Studies LAIS/BIS with a minor in Psychology and 3) Honors with a concentration in Literary Archaeo-astronomy. I plan to graduate in 2024. I want to blog to connect with like-minded individuals.
In class, a fellow student in my Positive Psychology class at UNM taught by Dr. Bruce Smith asked the question, “If the picture (Escher completed CLIV, also known as Angels and Devils, in 1960) were turned (45 degrees) so that the angel was on top would more people see the angel first?”
The answer, I think, is “yes.” Perception due to presentation is a crucial point to contemplate. Negativity bias is guided by our internal cues in reaction to external signals. However, those internal cues were once taught, shaped, and learned, to some extent by external cues from peers, friends, family, culture, and world views. Once cultivated, the internal cues learned and put in place in the early stages of development for each person continue like a software program until questioned.
Does this suggest that there are different types of negativity bias? Yes, there is personal negativity bias. But to what extent is that negativity bias groomed and related first to influences from peers, friends, family, culture, and world negativity bias? Do what measurable degree do individuals learn negativity bias? How much of each person’s negativity bias is innate? How is negativity bias essential for preserving the species, and to what measurable degree? Peers, friends, family, culture, and world negativity bias shape the individual negativity bias according to the time and place of the person’s existence. How do individuals grow out of a negativity bias related to being groomed during a war, a depression, or a holocaust? The question then is to what measurable degrees do the aforementioned affect an individual’s negativity bias. Then the next question is, can individuals deprogram themselves from negativity bias to a healthy degree? And if so, how?
I identify with anyone whence they say that cleaning puts them in a state of flow. I remember watching “The Einstein Approximation” is the fourteenth episode of the third season of the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. This episode first aired on Monday, February 1, 2010. The summary includes, “Sheldon’s search for the answer to a physics problem (Why electrons behave as if they have no mass when traveling through a graphene sheet-a sheath of stacked carbon molecules) keeps him awake for several days and he becomes obsessed with trying to solve it acting crazier than normal.”
Which is in a sense a superior/excellent example of the flow state dichotomy based on the wave or the particle in quantum physics.
“A few hours afterwards, Leonard and Penny are asleep again, but Sheldon wakes them up and tells them that his solution to his math problem is working in a menial job, much like how Albert Einstein did when he was working at the Patent Office in Switzerland and discovered special relativity.
“The next day, Sheldon goes to a job center and tries to apply for several menial jobs, but quickly angers the clerk he talks to. Sheldon is eventually removed from the center by security and decides to work as a busboy without pay with Penny and Bernadette at the Cheesecake Factory. Sheldon quickly realizes that being a waiter is more menial than being a busboy, and quickly trades positions, excelling at waiting. Although he is never hired, the restaurant appears happy to let him continue with his work (presumably as he is not asking for pay). Later on, after taking Leonard, Howard and Raj’s orders, Sheldon accidentally drops a pile of plates, but realizes that he’s been looking at his problem all wrong and that the electrons move through the graphene in waves, and rushes off to solve his problem, leaving Penny to take care of his mess.”
From this episode, we glean that one type of flow, such as cleaning, can be an outward state of flow that can allow for an inner state of flow to be happening simultaneously. So that a portal between flow states can allow/qualify for an epiphany whence the creative intellectual flow state spontaneously opens because of some simple but meaningful synchronistic event from the mundane physical flow state. I use this technique often and clean/do housework intensely whence working on a research problem. Most naturally and automatically, some synchronicity in the mundane world or external flow state will trigger an experience that will allow the inner intellectual, creative flow state to manifest itself. So, yes, cleaning the bathroom, a bedroom, or washing windows can and does put people into the flow state. If you notice, you may find that after you have cleaned the bathroom, a bedroom, or washed the windows some other area of your life opens up with freshness and new meaning. Cleaning the bathroom and finding fresh perspective in other areas of one’s life is another attribute of the flow state; it allows multidimensional self-expressions to transform simultaneously.
It does not matter what type of flow state one is in at any given moment in time. The most crucial point is to be in a state of flow. Soon, one begins to savor in gratefulness all the wonderful and varied textures that make up the myriad examples of flow states that are unique to everyone, depending upon one’s maturity in each of the VIP strengths. Each person is like a snowflake in this regard, complex delicate, ephemeral, and beautiful in one’s psychological ornate structure, like the concepts of PI and PHI.

After replying to your post, I was moved to go for a walk in nature. Walking in nature also puts me in a state of flow. On the walk I began to think about the following ideas that I wrote about in response to your experience of cleaning your room.

Portals for the state of flow within an individual can be identified, reached, and followed into a state of flow by simply following one’s joy of concentration in deep focus.

Portals for the state of flow connect within the psyche of an individual on various levels of awareness simultaneously via threads of association/memory that link the various levels of awareness in time simultaneously through effortless and spontaneous imagery and creative imagination.
Upon walking, I realized another happening that can put one into a spiral of the flow state. Flow states can be ever-deepening and widening either externally or internally, depending upon the focus of the flow state. What I discovered that I never put into words prior to today is that one may find gestalt ideas within one’s consciousness and that act of gestalt from various personalities that utilize the virtue inventory assessment (VIP) may collaborate and unify a totally new idea based upon the initial ideas that the various personalities had within oneself via the spiraling gestalt.
